Liverpool airport still closed; all flights cancelled

Liverpool John Lennon Airport has remained closed and flights cancelled all day after a private plane skidded off the runway at 6am this morning.

The plane was carrying three crew and one passenger- believed to be Liverpool FC managing owner Mike Gordon -  but there are no reported injuries.

The airport said late this afternoon that it was still working with specialist contractors to remove the private aircraft and the runway remained closed.

Arriving flights have been cancelled or diverted to Manchester throughout the day.

Passengers are being advised to contact their airline rather than the airport for further information.

An airport spokesperson said: "Anyone travelling from the airport today is advised to contact their airline for the latest information.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and can assure customers we are doing all we can to resume services as quickly as possible.

"Further updates to follow."
