American Airlines taps Google Assistant for airport lounge translations

American Airlines is tapping Google tech to ensure its customer interactions aren't lost in translation.

It is testing the technology at Los Angeles International Airport that offers automated interpretation of 29 languages to help passengers at its airport lounges.

Google Assistant's 'interpreter mode'' began a trial last week at LAX in the Admirals Clubs at Terminals 4 and 5.

It is able to translate in real time and is used as a backup when a multilingual representative is not available.

It can interpret conversations in Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese among others.

"The science fiction universal translator is now science fact. Incorporating technology like the Google Assistant's interpreter mode will help us break down barriers, and make travel more accessible to all,'' said Maya Leibman, American Airlines' chief information officer.
