British holidaymakers trapped in Tenerife hotel hit by coronavirus






British holidaymakers are among the 1,000 hotel guests in Tenerife in quarantine after an Italian man who was staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace tested positive for coronavirus.


The four-star hotel in the south of the island, which is featured by TUI, Jet2holidays, Loveholidays, Expedia and Booking.com among others, is in lockdown, according to reports in the Spanish media.


Travel agents have appealed for information after guests woke up this morning to find notes slipped under their doors telling them to stay in their rooms.





One agent posted on social media that the guests, who had travelled with TUI, had not been given any further information. Early this morning, they had not been provided with any food either and she said that although she had called TUI, the operator hadn't been able to provide any further information.


Police have been outside the hotel making sure no-one goes in or out.


The Italian patient, from the Lombardy region of Italy where there have been several deaths from coronavirus, is currently being kept in isolation and his test results are being sent to Madrid for a second analysis.


He reported feeling feverish for several days and went to a private clinic where he was first tested for the virus. He has been staying at the hotel with his wife for the last six days.


He is the third person to test positive for the virus in Spain after a British man in Mallorca on February 9 and a German man on the Canary Island of La Gomera on February 1.

Many British tourists who were staying at the hotel over last week's half-term holiday had to extend their stay when a sandstorm grounded their flights. One agent posted on social media that they believed their Jet2 clients had been put up in the H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel when their flight was delayed.


A spokesman for Jet2 said today that the company was trying to gather information and would provide an update 'as soon as possible'. He added: "We are aware of reports that a non-Jet2holidays' customer staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace in Tenerife has tested positive for coronavirus. Under the advice of the Regional and the Spanish Government Authorities, the hotel has been placed under quarantine. The health and safety of our customers is our absolute priority, and we will release more information as it becomes available. In line with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office advice, our flying programme remains unchanged."
