Doncaster Sheffield Airport submits plan for rail link

Doncaster Sheffield Airport has today submitted a business case to the government for a new national and regional rail connection.

It would require 4.5 miles of new track to be laid to provide a high-speed electrified line to the airport, which would relieve congestion on the East Coast Mainline and create more opportunitie for the airport to expand.

Airport owners Peel Group, Sheffield City Region and Doncaster Council claim the line would deliver 33,000 jobs within the next 10 years, almost a third of them within the next five years.

The plan would quadruple the number of people able to access the airport via a 90-minute rail journey from 2.4 million to nine million and reduce the need for 18,000 trans Pennine car journeys.

The GatewayEast Growth Hub Rail scheme will provide a new rail connection to the East Coast Mainline and the Lincoln line, with a new rail station to be located at Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Sheffield Mayor Dan Jarvis said: "I am pleased that this critically important scheme has reached another key milestone with the submission to Government. The benefits to communities and businesses through connecting the country's fastest growing regional airport to the national and regional rail network are huge.

"We have to make sure that we get people off our roads and onto sustainable public transport. This investment would help make that a reality."
