AirAsia 'hibernating' most of its planes

AirAsia Group is grounding almost all its planes across Southeast Asia and India.

Most of its affiliated airlines will or already have stopped all flight operations.

The airline says it is 'temporarily hibernating' most of its fleet of more than 250 aircraft.

AirAsia Malaysia will halt all flights from March 28 to April 21.

AirAsia Philippines, AirAsia India and AirAsia X Thailand have already grounded all services.

AirAsia India, temporarily suspended its flights for 21 days to comply with the nationwide lockdown in India.

Long haul unit AirAsia X will suspend most flights and AirAsia Indonesia is still operating but with much reduced frequencies.

"The board believes this temporary fleet hibernation is the right thing to do to ensure the well-being of our guests and employees, which will remain as the top priority of our business during this challenging time," it said in a stock market filing.

"The company will continue to evaluate the situation closely and is prepared to reinstate the services as soon as the situation improves."
