Virgin Voyages delays launch until October

The eagerly awaited launch of Virgin Voyages has been pushed back to October.

The inaugural season was originally due to begin this spring and was then delayed until August.

"We've made the difficult decision to cancel our sailings through October 15, 2020. We've been working hard to find a way to set sail by August, but that hasn't turned out to be possible," Tom McAlpin, president and CEO of Virgin Voyages, said in a message on the Virgin website.

Virgin took delivery of its first Scarlet Lady in February just as the Covid-19 outbreak began to spread beyond China.

That led to the cancellation of preview events in New York and Miami.

Miami based Scarlet Lady was originally due to begin sailing in April 2020 to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

The second cruise ship, the Valiant Lady, was due to launch in May 2021 and offer Mediterranean sailings.
