American Airlines, JetBlue team up to navigate Covid-19 crisis

The collapse in air travel demand caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is forcing rivals to join hands and work together.

American Airlines and JetBlue forged a new alliance which taps JetBlue's strong customer base in New York and Boston.

The airlines will begin codeshare flights focused on JetBlue's domestic network in the Northeast and American's international services.

The partnership will offer through ticketing and baggage to the final destination as well as aligning some frequent flier benefits.

Details of the loyalty program partnership have not been announced yet.

The alliance will allow the airlines to restart paused routes with less risk and will enable JetBlue to add more flights at New York JFK to feed passengers to and from American's international flights.

"Once the coronavirus pandemic has ended, the new partnership is certain to facilitate American adding new long-haul markets in Europe, Africa, India, and South America," a joint news release said.

"Pairing JetBlue's domestic network with American's international route map creates a new competitive choice in the Northeast, where customers are longing for an alternative to the dominant network carriers," said Joanna Geraghty, JetBlue's chief operating officer.

The carriers say JetBlue customers get access to 60 new routes operated by American and American's customers can connect on a single itinerary to 130 new routes operated by JetBlue.
