American Airlines shifting Asia hub to Dallas-Fort Worth

American Airlines is shifting its Asia focus from Los Angeles to its main Dallas-Fort Worth hub.

It is a move to cut costs and improve efficiency despite the geographical limitations.

"Dallas certainly doesn't have the best geography for an Asian hub but it does have some advantages in connecting people in the Southeast to Asia," Brian Znotins, American's VP of Network and Schedule Planning told the Dallas Morning News.

It should make journeys more seamless for more American passengers as about one quarter of all traffic goes through DFW, the airline said.

It will also have less competition on transpacific routes with a single stop for most passengers.

"In a lot of ways, this is more about reducing LA than boosting DFW," Znotins added.

"Every Asian carrier feels the need to serve LA and that creates overcapacity. Even going into the pandemic, we were losing money on those LA flights."

American expects international capacity will still be down by 25% in summer 2021.

"Covid-19 has forced us to re-evaluate our network.  American will have a significantly smaller international network in the year ahead, but we are using this opportunity to hit reset and create a network using the strength of our strategic hubs," said American's Chief Revenue Officer Vasu Raja.
