Ski operators extend cancellations as season write-off looms

Club Med has cancelled its ski program until 27 February while Crystal Ski Holidays has suspended all holidays until 5 March.

The extension of the cancellations follows confirmation from the French Government that all Alpine ski lifts will remain closed until the end of February.

French authorities warned the entire season is likely to be a write-off.

"We are looking at a saison blanche (a white season)," tourism minister Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne said.

"The term does not refer to the amount of snow, which has been copious this year, but that it will be a non-event.

"The government is well aware that the sector needs clarity and we are committed to providing this with regard to the rest of the season as quickly as possible."

Crystal Holidays said on its website: "We're sorry to confirm that due to the impact of Covid-19 and the restrictions now in place, we can't operate our holidays to Andorra, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Finland, France, Italy, Norway, Switzerland or the USA for departures up to and including 5 March 2021."#

Club Med said on twitter: "Many of you will have heard that the French Government has announced its intention to keep all Alpine ski lifts closed until February 27 2021. Unfortunately this means we will need to cancel all Club Med ski holidays until February 27."

The catastrophic winter season has already claimed two operators - Alpine Elements and VIP Ski - although both brands may return in 2021/22 following management buyouts.
