Singapore emerges as global cruise leader

The tiny city state of Singapore - smaller than New York City - is right now one of the cruise capitals of the world. About one-third of the world's cruises depart from Singapore - and every sailing is a cruise to nowhere.

Royal Caribbean Cruises and Genting's Dream Cruises have been operating short sailings since late last year, and so far more than 120,000 Singapore residents have taken a cruise, saysSingapore Tourism Board Chief Executive Officer Keith Tan.

Tan played down Singapore's current status as a major cruise hub and knows it won't last.  "Let me just say this in context -- one-third of global cruise throughput in a time when virtually all other cruise destinations and cruise ports have stopped or are not moving at all is nothing to crow about," Tan said.
