France to ban short domestic air routes

Short air routes in France are to face the axe as part of environmental protection measures. French MPs voted to scrap domestic airline flights on routes that can be travelled in less than two and a half hours by train, in order to cut emissions.

It could see the end of popular air routes such as Paris to Lyon and Nantes. This is actually a scaled-down version as the climate commission has originally wanted to cut all domestic flights that can be served by rail in four hours.

Air France-KLM said it plans to reduce the number of French domestic routes by 40% by the end of this year.
