Positive Covid case identified on Japan cruise ship

A Japanese cruise ship is cutting short a voyage and returning to port after a passenger tested positive for Covid-19.

NYK Cruises Co said the Asuka II ship would return to Yokohama port near Tokyo.

The infected passenger is isolating in a special cabin and has only been in close contact with one other person.

The ship was scheduled to stop at Aomori and Hokkaido before returning to Yokohama on 5 May.

A NYK Cruises spokeswoman said all passengers had supplied negative test results prior to the cruise and further tests were carried out which is when the positive case was discovered.

The passenger is said to be recovering and in a stable condition.

Japan was the scene of the first major Covid outbreak on a cruise ship early last year aboard the Diamond Princess.

It infected more than 700 people leading to more than a dozen deaths.
