China Airlines fined for flight crew quarantine lapses

Taiwan based China Airlines China Airlines has been slapped with a fine of NT$1 million (US$35,800) for lax oversight of flight crew quarantine.

The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) will impose the fine for violating the Civil Aviation Act and Aircraft Flight Operation Regulations.

The regulator said it failed workers by not conducting adequate quarantine and health management measures.

In the past two weeks 11 CAL pilots, a CAL flight attendant and six Novotel hotel workers have tested positive for Covid-19, as well as a further 11 family members of the airline and hotel workers.

China Airlines uses the Novotel Taipei Taoyuan International Airport hotel for staff accommodation.

The actual source of many of the infections is still unknown, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung said.

A day earlier, the Tourism Bureau fined Novotel NT$150,000 for mixing general hotel guests with CAL flight crews in quarantine on the same floor at the hotel.
