Cathay Pacific plans closure of London pilot base

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific is looking to shut down its London pilot base.

It could lead to the loss of nearly 100 jobs.

It is the latest cost-cutting initiative which has seen the closure of overseas pilot bases in Canada, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.

"We have notified our London-based pilots and their union representatives of a proposal to close our London pilot base. This is simply a proposal at this stage and no decisions have been made,"~ a~ spokesperson ~told the South China Morning Post.

The airline says many of the airline's London based crew members had not flown since April 2020.

At its pre-pandemic peak Cathay operated up to five daily flights to London, which is now down to just once a day.

The airline posted a record US$2.8 billion loss last year, and expects to report a large 2021 half-year loss, despite significantly cutting labour costs after thousands of employees were laid off.
