Ryanair delivers overflight petition to EU
As promised, Ryanair delivered its ‘Protect Overflights: Keep EU Skies Open‘ petition to the EU Commission.
The petition surpassed the required one million signatures.
There are more than 1.1 million signatures from passengers demanding that the EU Commission protect overflights.
Country specific ATC strikes have led to overflight restrictions on multiple days, causing cancellations and restrictions across Europe.
This has happened on several occasions during French strikes.
Ryanair says there have been 57 days of ATC strikes forcing airlines to cancel thousands of EU overflights.
The budget carrier wants France and other EU states to follow the example of Spain, Italy and Greece which use ‘Minimum Service Laws’ to protect overflights.
Ryanair is calling for swift action from the EU Commission.
It demands enforcing binding arbitration for disputes before any strike action can commence.
Additionally, Ryanair wants a 21-day notice of any strike action
“It is unacceptable that ATC strikes can result in the cancellation of thousands of EU passengers’ flights,” said Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary.
“Europe’s passengers are sick and tired of suffering unnecessary overflight cancellations.”
