11 dead as ice storms hit the US and Canada
At least 11 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of households left without power as a severe ice storm sweeps parts of Canada and the northern US.
About 400,000 customers in eastern Canada and 280,000 in the US state of Michigan have been left without electricity.
With temperatures expected to drop as low as -15C (5F) in southern Canada over the next few days, cities have opened ‘warming centres’ for those left without power.
Electricity suppliers in Canada say they cannot resort power until Thursday, and perhaps not until the weekend for some.
Flights have been delayed or cancelled at one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
The US National Weather Service is warning “another round of snow and ice”.
