40 reported dead in Bolivian rioting

Rioting in the Bolivian capital La Paz has led to around 40 deaths, with flights to the city being cancelled and other transport links disrupted.

Protests have affected the capital city, the adjoining city of El Alto, and La Paz International Airport, which is situated between the two. Flights in and out of the airport were indefinitely cancelled on Sunday, and many roads into the city have been blocked by demonstrators, causing food and fuel shortages in La Paz.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) website, at www.fco.gov.uk/travel, states: “Bolivia is undergoing a period of social unrest. Road travel is subject to blockades and disruption at any time. The security situation has deteriorated over the last few days – the Altiplano between La Paz and Peru is badly affected. You are advised to avoid this area. The airport at La Paz is closed.”

The demonstrations have been aimed at stopping plans by foreign companies to export natural gas to the United States. The Independent newspaper reports that 26 people died on Sunday after troops opened fire on demonstrators; the Bolivian church reportedly stated that the killings represented “a massacre”.
