On the eve of the Australia day weekend, Virgin Blue has announced it will use one of its brand new EMBRAER E-Jets to launch direct flights between Canberra and the world famous playground, the Gold Coast.

The airline will begin daily services between the two destinations from 4 March 2008 operating the sleek EMBRAER jet aircraft. The aircraft has 78 seats and is ideally suited to the route.

Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey said, “The delivery of new E-Jet’s means a host of new opportunities for destinations like Canberra and the Gold Coast as the aircraft is the perfect size for this market. It’s a fantastic jet and we’re very pleased to be offering new direct flight options for people travelling from both the Gold Coast and Canberra.”

He continued, “In the spirit of Australia Day, we thought it was a good time to announce a new route linking the nation’s capital to one of the country’s best known and booming tourist destinations.”

Virgin Blue’s schedule is perfectly suited for those wanting to take off from Canberra for a long weekend of sunshine and surf or for those Gold Coast locals keen to check out the capital or hit the ski slopes in ski season.

To celebrate the new route, Virgin Blue has launched a sale fare of $75* one-way on the Internet as part of its “Fare Dinkum Sale” and is available now until midnight 28 January 2008. The flights are available from 4 March 2008 until 2 April 2008 and 29 April 2008 – 26 June 2008.

Everyday low fares will start from $99* one way on the net.

Multi award winning airline Virgin Blue and international carriers Pacific Blue and Polynesian Blue currently operate a fleet of 61 modern Boeing 737 and Embraer E-Jet aircraft flying to 24 Australian and eight international destinations including New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and the Cook Islands. Virgin Blue was the first airline in the world to launch a Government-certified carbon offset program, where Guests can offset the carbon emissions from their flights. Virgin Blue Group has also announced plans to launch Australia’s newest international airline, V Australia, set to commence flights between Australia and the USA from late 2008, subject to regulatory approvals
