A rough kayaking adventure for Shackleton ‘wanabees’
Explorers’ Corner is offering a rugged sea kayak expedition in Antarctica.
The company says the only types of traveler to book the month-long trip are “very experienced cold-water kayakers and expeditioners with a ‘flexible attitude’ who also have winter camping experience.â€
“Explorers’ Corner’s description of its new month-long Antarctic Sea Kayaking Expedition can sometimes sound more 1914 Shackleton Endurance Expedition than 2008 winter getaway,†says the company.
“The only month-long guided commercial kayaking/camping trip in the Antarctic Peninsula; exclusive opportunity to paddle by sea kayak the infamous waters around Cape Horn; 4 nights camping on the Antarctic Peninsula,†Explorers says of the trip.
Travelers will spend a majority of their time in a small expedition sailing boat rather than an ice breaker ship, the company says.
“These waters are some of the wildest, most animal rich and most beautiful on Earth,” said Olaf Malver, Explorers’ Corner senior guide who is said to have led the first-ever guided commercial sea kayaking adventure to Antarctica.
Trip dates are in November and December. The price for one person in a group of six is $14,500.
The trip departs from Ushuaia, Argentina.
Explorers’ Corner is a Berkeley, California-based specialty travel company offering one-of-a-kind destinations and experiences, and “old-world” customer service for serious adventure travelers.
