ABTA fraud story reaches mainstream press
Allegations of a “£1.2 million” swindle at ABTA have made it into the mainstream press, with the Daily Mail reporting on the legal battle currently being faced by the Association’s former legal director Riccardo Nardi.
As reported, Nardi has been dismissed from his job at ABTA, which has now launched its own civil claim, accusing him of “fraud, misrepresentation, and/or breach of fiduciary duty, and/or knowing breach of trust”.
The newspaper reports that Mr Nardi, who joined ABTA in 1996, was last year given the task of tackling fraud against ABTA members. The Mail quotes a spokesman as saying: “ABTA has a well-earned reputation for combating fraud. The civil action promptly taken to safeguard our position is another example of our determination to maintain that reputation.”
ABTA’s Frances Tuke this morning told News From Abroad that the Mail story contains nothing new about the issue, adding: “Even the quote they have used has been recycled from previous articles in The Times and the Evening Standard!” The newspaper states that Scotland Yard is investigating allegations of fraud.
