African country’s gun culture highlighted
Zimbabwe: Reporter threatened outside government building
Anyone brave enough to be heading off the watch parts of the cricket World Cup in Zimbabwe will no doubt be aware of the controversy surrounding the competition. But the dangers of travelling in the African country were highlighted this week when the Daily Telegraph sports correspondent Martin Johnson has a gun pulled on him as he tried to arrange his visa. The journalist was given a temporary visa when he arrived in the country and told to extend it at the country’s department of information, but was confronted by a man with a gun as he approached the building in the capital Harare. He told the newspaper: “An armed guard came out from nowhere with a Sten gun on his shoulder. He removed it from the non-offensive position to suggest to me that he didn’t care for my presence.” For the latest Foreign Office advice on Zimbabwe visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel.
