Air India plane flew to the US with ‘hole’ in door

An Air India Boeing 777 has been taken out of service upon landing at San Francisco after a hole was spotted in the seal of one of its doors.

Flight AI 183, which was carrying passengers, landed safely and cabin pressurisation was maintained throughout the flight, the airline said.

However, reports suggest a ‘hissing’ noise was heard during the flight.

According to an unnamed engineer, the door was in good working order prior to departure, Indian media reported.

"The aircraft door was not damaged before departure from Delhi. Engineering did not do any work on this door. Aircraft boarding in Delhi took place using an aerobridge so no question of this being damaged before departure."

"But there is a damage and we are investigating where and how this could have taken place," the engineer added, saying reports of a ‘hissing’ noise are unfounded.

The return SFO-Delhi flight was cancelled with about 100 booked passengers being accommodated on other flights.
