AirAsia counter sues MAHB over KLIA2 fee row

AirAsia Group has hit back at Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) with a counter lawsuit as the squabble over airport fees rumbles on.

MAHB filed an initial lawsuit against the budget carrier for refusing to collect an increased passenger service charge from all travellers.

AirAsia claims the higher fees, which were increased in line with Kuala Lumpur’s main airport, are not value for money.

Travellers at the low cost terminal KLIA2 should not have to pay the same airport tax as facilities are inferior.

"MAHB does not provide the same level of service at KLIA2, where AirAsia operates from, compared to KLIA, which is a terminal for full- service carriers," AirAsia CEO Riad Asmat and AirAsia X CEO Benyamin Ismail said in a statement.

The carriers hit back at MAHB with a RM400 million lawsuit claiming a list of issues at KLIA2 has cost them money, such as losses through delays and a runway closure, a ruptured fuel line causing disruption and poor maintenance and cleanliness.

"We have repeatedly communicated these and other issues to MAHB, but nothing has been done," they added.
