Airlines cancel flights as protests intensify in Assam
Several India airlines have cancelled flights and issued waivers over violent protests taking place in the states of Assam and Tripura.
IndiGo, Vistara, Air India and SpiceJet are among the carriers which have cancelled scheduled flights to Guwahati, Dibrugarh and Jorhat.
Protests have taken place across Assam in opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which was passed by parliament this week.
The proposed amendments seek to grant full citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan facing persecution who entered India before the end of 2014.
In Guwahati the army is on the streets and the city was placed under a curfew.
At least three people have died in clashes.
Full service carrier Vistara said it cancelled flights ‘as per government advice due to current disturbances in Assam.’
"We are offering free change or cancellation to Guwahati and Dibrugarh through Sunday, December 15," it tweeted.
"GoAir is offering a waiver on date change fees/rescheduling of tickets for travel to and from Guwahati," GoAir said.
All train services from Guwahati to the upper Assam region have also been suspended.
