Airlines offering waivers to stranded passengers

The US Northeast continues to the feel the full impact of heavy snowfall and strong Artic winds across the region, and air travelers have felt the knock-on effects right across the country.

As far afield as sunny Los Angeles over 50 flights were canceled by early morning.

As the snow plows and de-icing machines continue working round the clock, the nation’s airlines have been taking pro-active steps to ease the misery for thousands of stranded passengers.

Airlines are offering waivers for most of the affected airports through the region, generally for flights leaving after the weekend.

American Airlines are honoring tickets for fliers across Pennsylvania and New York states and up to Boston. US Airways are offering flight waivers stretching across Pennsylvania to Portland, Maine.

United’s current waiver policy extends from Chicago and right across the Northeast. JetBlue’s affected services stretch from Washington, DC to Boston.

"Delays and cancellations as a result of slowed traffic in and out of our Eastern cities are likely," said Tamara Young, a JetBlue spokeswoman. "So we want to make sure our customers have options available to them."

Amtrak also announced reduced services on Friday for Northeast Regional and Acela trains between Boston and Washington, DC, but trains in Pennsylvania and Maine were expected to run to near normal schedules.

Passengers with bookings on the affected services are being proactively notified by Amtrak Customer Service.
