Airports braced for day of delays
Heathrow and Gatwick airports have alerted passengers to the possibility of delays today as immigration workers join the UK public sector strike.
A statement on the Heathrow Airport website says: “Due to strike action by UK Border Agency staff at all UK airports, passengers arriving at Heathrow are likely to experience a longer wait time at passport control.
“We are working with UK Border Agency to minimise delays to passengers and flights. This website will be updated with the latest information for passengers if the situation changes.â€
A similar statement is published on Gatwick’s site. Both airports stress, however, that departing passengers are not affected by the walk out and should experience no delays.
Passengers arriving into Luton, Edinburgh, Belfast, City and Stansted airports are experiencing delays this morning however Manchester airport’s twitter feed shows passengers arriving there have experienced minimal disruption as staff have been deployed from elsewhere in the airport to handle the staff shortages.
Aberdeen Airport says it expects little disruption from the strike.
Eurostar is reporting that services are not affected at all and the operator has laid on an extra service from London to Paris and back today for those affected by flight disruption.
SeaFrance has also warned passengers travelling from Calais into Dover today to prepare for long waits at passport control.
Meanwhile, across the UK thousands of parents have had to make alternative childcare arrangements as striking teachers closed schools across the country.
Homeworking company Travel Counsellors has organised a day of activities for the children of its employees to allow their parents to work as usual.
