American Airlines discovers loose seats on two planes

American Airlines has had to make emergency landings after loose seats were found on two of its aircraft.

The airline is to inspect eight planes over fears there could be a problem with the way certain seats fit into tracking on the floor of the Boeing 757 planes, according to American Airlines spokeswoman Andrea Huguely.

On Saturday, a Miami-bound flight took off from Boston when the row of seats became unhinged and slid around the cabin, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing at New York City’s JFK Airport.

A second plane also had loose seats yesterday after taking off for Miami and was forced to return to JFK, reports the Daily Mail.

The incidents involved separate repair facilities and groups of workers.

Airline and government officials discouraged speculation that the incidents could be related to labour-management tension at American, which is cutting labor costs and laying off maintenance workers as it tries to turn around under bankruptcy protection.

American spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said the passengers in the ‘wobbly’ row were relocated to safer seats.

‘A second aircraft was used to continue the flight to Miami,’ she told the Daily Mail. ‘Safety is our top priority. We never have – and never will – compromise the safety and reliability of our fleet.’

The cause of the incident, she said, is under investigation.
