American Airlines launches ‘use it or lose it’ policy
American Airlines has told US passengers that they will not receive credit for tickets if they miss or skip a flight.
The new ‘use it or lose it’ policy applies to non-refundable tickets bought from now for travel on or after October 1.
Customers can still make a change before the flight, if they rebook on another flight and pay the applicable change fee.
Previously, customers had up to a year to apply the value of the unused ticket to another flight and to choose which flight to use it for.
American has also changed its rule on stand-by options for travellers using non-refundable tickets. Customers can still stand-by for an alternative flight on the ticketed day of departure, but will have to pay $100 to do so.
The policy is effective for tickets issued from now for travel on or after January 1.
