Ralph Manecke, 56 from Boston was killed by a single gunshot during the mugging in Mindanao in the south of the country.
He was approached just after withdrawing about $800 cash from the ATM in the town of Trento.
“While we were withdrawing, an SUV drove up and a man stepped out of it,” said the man’s partner, a Philippine national.
“He greeted us a good evening but I was taken aback when I saw he was pointing a gun at us. He warned my partner not to move. The man grabbed the bag from me. Then I heard a gunshot.”
