Animal rights group fumes over hotel’s croc drops
Tourists will be able to swoop low over a four metre crocodile as part of a new Queensland tourism venture in Cairns.
Called the ZOOm it will open in the Cairns Wildlife Dome on top of the Reef Hotel Casino.
One of the highlights would see visitors attached to a zip line “flying†over Goliath in his crocodile, the Cairns Post reports.
The operators say it will rival Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin where visitors can swim with crocodiles in a glass cage.
Animals Australia advocacy group said it was outraged that “a crocodile would be used to feed tourists’ appetite for actionâ€.
Tourists would be secured to a continuous belay system, similar to that used on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The operators says the project would meet the highest safety and security standards and the welfare of the animals and birds, including the 700kg crocodile, would be paramount.
It would not be an opportunity to tease or aggravate the crocodile, they said.
“Nor would Goliath be able “to leap up and grab anyone and it will be impossible for anyone to fall in,” they added.
