Another assault reported on Corfu
Woman attacked in popular but increasingly controversial beach resort
The island of Corfu seems set for more unwanted publicity this week after it was revealed an 18-year-old woman has become the fourth tourist to suffer a serious sex attack on the island this season.
The woman was from Pontypridd, south Wales, and was assaulted at the popular beach resort of Kavos. A man has already been arrested in connection with the assault. Greek authorities have already taken action to deal with the rising number of attacks; plain-clothes officers are now operating in the resort.
Greece has seen a huge upturn in the number of reported sex attacks; there were 34 rapes reported in the country last summer compared to 17 in 1998.
Kavos’ reputation is perhaps under an even larger cloud; last week it was reported that five Club 18-30 representatives were filmed taking part in an impromptu live sex show on the town’s beach in front of hundreds of tourists.
