British Airways is repatriating 1,000 passengers stranded in Spain due to the volcanic ash disruption by sending out extra aircraft from London City Airport.
Wholly owned subsidiary BA CityFlyer will be operating five additional services from London City to Madrid and Barcelona from yesterday until Sunday.
Most of the flights will be using new 98-seat Embraer 190 aircraft, meaning almost 1,000 extra passengers will be able to get back home by the end of the weekend.
BA CityFlyer managing director Peter Simpson said: “Fortunately we had some spare aircraft availability this week so we took the decision to run extra daily flights to assist as many people as possible in getting home.”
Passengers who were booked to travel on cancelled BA flights to and from Europe will be able to re-book on these new flights free of charge.
