At least 40 killed in Nepal plane crash
A plane has crashed at Kathmandu’s international airport, kiling at least 40 of those onbard.
Some 22 othere are injured, including a Nepalese travel agent.
Flight BS211 from US-Bangla, a Bangladeshi airline, veered off the runway while landing and crashed on the east side of Tribhuvan International Airport’s runway, the Kathmandu Post said.
It was carrying 77 people.
The runway has been closed and flights to and from the airport suspended.
Photographs have been posted on Twitter showing a plume of smoke on the runway and local news website My Republica said firefighters were at the scene.
The plane was identified in local media as S2-AGU, a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400, but this has not been officially confirmed.
Travel agent Basanta Bohora, who was taken to hospital after escaping from the wreckage of the plane through a window, said the plane started shaking as it approached Kathmandu, followed by a loud bang.
Of the 40 people killed 31 died at the crash site and nine died in hospital, said police. Nine people are unaccounted for. Among the 22 injured, some are critical.
