ATUC warns of unaffordable fares
Group tells Government not to be swayed by environmental claims
The passenger watchdog ATUC (Air Transport Users’ Council) has predicted that airfares will rise to “unaffordable” levels unless more runways are built in the UK.
According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, ATUC is claiming that visits to friends and relatives in different countries will become the preserve of the wealthy, if the Government acts on the advice of environmental groups and decides to postpone the expansion of aviation capabilities in the south-east of the country.
The newspaper quotes from a submission from ATUC to the Government, in which it warns: “This would not simply be the foregone enjoyment of leisure travel. There would also be the emotional cost of not being able to visit friends and relatives overseas.”
The council goes on to urge the Government not to be swayed by the claims made by environmental campaigners.
