Aussies abandon land of the long weekend

Leading travel directory TotalTravel.com recently conducted an online survey over a four-week period which asked “Would you give up your public holidays to receive an extra two weeks of annual holiday leave?”

43% of respondents (169 people) wanted holidays longer than the average four weeks of annual leave instead of the occasional day off, claiming that four weeks was not enough.

In a close contest, 40% of respondents (158 people) said that they did not want to give up their long weekends as they liked celebrating public holidays like Easter and Australia Day with their family and friends too much.

TotalTravel.com Global Marketing Manager Paul Fisher said it was interesting to see what working conditions Aussies preferred in 2007, adding, “With people leading such busy, pressured lives nowadays, it’s no wonder that people want some extra time to relax and recuperate”.

“An extra two weeks of annual leave would no doubt leave a smile on the faces of many workers throughout Australia.”

“On the other hand, public holidays are still cherished by the working population and it’s no fun being stuck in the office on a public holiday while your friends and family are having a party or barbecue.”

“I think this is a debate that will continue for many years.”

Also in the poll, 13% of respondents (51 people) thought any holidays would be appreciated, as they didn’t receive annual leave entitlements at all, but only 4% (17) didn’t care, as they already worked public holidays and received extra annual leave in return.”

A total of 395 people participated in the online survey.

Launched in 2002, TotalTravel.com delivers a travel guide and directory for accommodation, activities, transport, restaurants and other visitor information.

It is also a marketplace for companies to promote their services.
