The Australia government has joined the US in advising its citizens to exercise caution while travelling in India.

There are fears of a terrorist attack in the country with Australians asked to employ ‘a high degree of caution in India overall.’

Department of Foreign Affairs posted an advisory saying: "On 1 November, the US government warned of an increased threat of terrorist attack to places in India frequented by westerners, such as religious sites, markets and festivals. Travellers should maintain heightened vigilance in public places at this time. We continue to advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in India overall. Higher levels apply in some parts of India."

It is asking people to reconsider travel to Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur and Chhattisgarh,

There is also a higher alert posted for the state of Jammu and Kashmir, except for  Jammu, Ladakh and Srinagar.

The original US advisory was sparked by reports of the Islamic State’s ‘desire’ to target India.
