Australians planning home holidays

More than a third of Australians are planning their next major trip within Australia, a new survey shows.

The Travelscene American Express survey found 34 percent of its 5000 participants plan to holiday at home, rather than overseas.

The results suggest the tourism industry’s recent efforts to encourage Australians to support domestic tourism may be paying off.

“These figures clearly show Australians have an appetite to see more of their country,” Bob Steel, Managing Director of Travelscene American Express, said.

“Double the number of people chose Australia as their destination of choice than any other area of the world.”

The survey found that once at their destination 31 percent of travellers want to visit places of interest, while almost 13 percent said to relax or do nothing was their preferred activity.
