Balearics cracking down on alcohol-fuelled antics
The Balearic Islands are cracking down again on anti-social behavior.
It is tightening rules on public drinking and party boats.
There will be a ban on drinking in the streets in major tourist areas in Mallorca and Ibiza with hefty fines imposed for violations.
Penalties will range from €500 to €1,500.
Drinking will still be permitted on terraces of licensed premises.
Party boats that sell alcohol will also be banned within one nautical mile from these areas.
It expands the original decree issued in 2020 to combat ‘overtourism.’
“Year after year news has appeared related to uncivil behaviour by young tourists that has caused deep concern among the rest of the citizens,” the decree said.
It is now called the ‘Responsible Tourism Decree’ which allocates €16 million from a sustainable tourist tax to fund responsible tourism initiatives.
Recently, there have been protests in the Canary Islands against overtourism and its related impacts like surging property prices and environmental damage.
