Bangkok airport not running out of puff
Smokers using Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok can carry on puffing – but only in the international terminal.
Thailand’s Public Health Ministry recently ordered the closure of all seven smoking rooms in the domestic passengers’ area of the airport, citing public health.
But 18 other smoking areas in the international area remain open.
Airport operator AoT told the Bangkok Post that banning smoking in the international area would cause too much of a backlash.
“Providing smokers’ rooms inside the terminal is part of services given to passengers, especially those on international flights,†said an airport spokesman.
“Without them a lot of smoking travellers will choose to bypass our airport and use other airports.
“Where is the smokers’ room? tops the list of most frequently asked questions by passengers at Suvarnabhumi,†the spokesman said.
“Smoking is not a crime but sort of a personal right that we need to respect,” AoT added.
