Basil……………..!!!

Friday, 16 Oct, 2007 0

It is not often that you sit in a hotel and imagine you could hear Sybil calling for Basil or even Manuel trotting by, but that is without doubt the all pervading feeling at The Mountain Heritage Hotel and Spa and Retreat, which The Mole visited this last weekend on a fabulous www.luxurycarhire.com.au weekend break, with a Mercedes 320CLK sports soft top to drive around in! [pictured right, outside The Mountain Heritage Hotel Spa & Retreat].

Don’t misunderstand me because while I was sure that Basil, Sybil and Manuel were hiding around the corner somewhere, there was nothing Fawlty Towers about the Mountain Heritage’s operation, providing, great rooms, great food, great staff, great ambiance and all set in what felt like a British country house hotel, except this time warp hotel also had fabulous views over the valleys and scarps of Blue Mountains and in particular the Jamison Valley.

The Mountain Heritage has quite rightly won heaps of awards and is a 4½* hotel and spa retreat offering luxurious accommodation and unrivalled panoramic views [left] over the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains wilderness, yet, it is small and cosy with just 41 rooms and suites and a very high standard of extra personal attention.

The Mountain Heritage can be found in the heart of the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, close to Katoomba town centre and is very much a property of contrast, with the romance and charm of yesteryear while providing all the luxuries of today…….the perfect location for that romantic and indulgent Blue Mountains getaway.

There are six different styles of accommodation to choose from, with The Mountain Heritage the only hotel style property in the Blue Mountains to offer guest bedrooms which feature a spa bath and fireplace in room, which is a unique touch and the fireplace, albeit a very effective gas coals fire, a very cosy and welcoming addition to the classic high ceilinged rooms.

The public rooms are really where the Fawlty Tower’s atmosphere really hits home, and while the hotel operation is smooth, seamless and efficient, the large overstuffed sofas and flowery fabrics [above], with a pianist playing in the bar, one couldn’t help imagine that Basil was going to come around the corner at any time!

Hang on, here he is and Sybil is right behind or is that in front of him……enter the hotel General Managers Ian Cannons and Trish Parsons – more about Ian and Trish tomorrow and also about the history of this amazing hotel, which also happens to contain what is reputedly the finest collection of historic photographs of Sydney.

Also this week, more about the great things to see, do and of course, eat and drink in the Blue Mountains – hey you just have to go there.
