A tourist is in intensive care after being attacked at a Bulgarian beach resort.

Adam Prosser, 27, of Fforestfach, Swansea, had been out for a meal with his girlfriend Kayley Harrison when she claims he was set upon by a group of men in Sunny Beach.

He had to fly home for treatment after doctors in Bulgaria refused to treat him without a health insurance card, reports the BBC.

He suffered swelling and bleeding on the brain and fractures to his skull.

Miss Harrison, 19, claims she was also attacked as she tried to help Mr Prosser.

A check up at Swansea’s Morriston Hospital revealed the serious head injury and he has been referred to specialists in Cardiff.

Miss Harrison said Mr Prosser was now in a stable condition but the attack had put the couple off going abroad "for life".

Sunny Beach, a purpose built holiday town, is the largest resort in Bulgaria.

* In a separate incident, a British woman has reportedly been stabbed several times during an attack in the Portuguese holiday resort of Albufeira.

The 40-year old is in a critical condition and being treated at Faro hospital following the attack.

The suspected attacker, 22, also British, was found shirtless and barefooted at a bus stop in the city in the Algarve region, according to ITV News, and is due to appear in court today.
