Best time to get lowest airfares: mornings

Sunday, 17 May, 2006 0

A tip for booking the cheapest airline fare: search in the morning.

“Airlines do what they call ‘retaliatory fare pricing’ where other airlines follow. These tend to pop up early in the day and disappear later as seats get sold,” said George Hobica, founder and owner of Airfare Watchdog.

Mr. Hobica is a former journalist whose company is growing fast in large part because he combines technology with human service.

Airfare Watchdog not only includes discount air carriers that often don’t share their fares with popular third party booking engines, but the company also benefits users by its single goal of finding the best deals. It has only a small portion of its revenue from on-site bookings, while most of its earnings come from advertisements.

Mr. Hobica says the route map section with more than 80 official airline route maps also has the largest collection on the internet.

By combining technology with a staff of four, Mr Hobica says users can save 20% or more on airfares.
