DENPASAR – Two Best Western-managed properties in Bali are under a cloud after their owners were accused of being in violation of local zoning regulations.

Bali Update (www.balidiscovery.com) is carrying a story from local sources indicating that the new Best Western Condotel in Kedonganan (Jimbaran) is under scrutiny.

Local residents are reported to be upset that the188-room apartment hotel complex, which is 90 percent completed, has exceeded the maximum 15m building height rule and also fails to honour the mandatory set back rules from a public road.

A local planning official told the media that local residents were becoming fed up to see the illegal structure allowed to continue its development, despite numerous complaints.

There have also been reports that the 110-room Hotel Sapta Patala in Kuta lacks the necessary licences and permits.

NusaBali reported that the hotel, owned by Wayan Wijana, and soon to be operated under the Best Western brand, originally opened in 1970 with seven rooms, later expanded to 57 rooms before its latest expansion to a 110-room property.

Bali Update said local legislators have called on the authorities to stop the construction of the new hotel projects until the proper licensing is in place.
