Bloomin’ Canberra

Even though Canberra will be brightened with more than one million blossoms during Floriade 2007 the intent is to reposition this annual event from a flower festival to a spring festival, media representatives learned during a briefing organised in Sydney.

Planned for Saturday 15 September to Sunday 14 October, “the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere” is expected to attract more than 350,000 visitors – half coming from interstate – said a spokesperson for Floriade.

his year the month-long festival will take on “an edgy element and a touch of irreverence” with the theme Aussie Icons, Myths and Legends embracing Australian inventions and brands, famous Australians, Aussie landscapes and Australian sporting culture and history.

The artwork for Floriade 2007 incorporates Australian symbols in a comic way.

The entertainment program includes a huge free concert by Australia’s favourite country star, Troy Cassar-Daley on 23 September, a heat of Telstra Road to Tamworth on 6 October and a dedicated Children’s Village every day of the week.

The Floriade theme travels beyond its setting in Commonwealth Park with a number of Canberra’s tourist attractions showcasing Australiana in an Aussie Icons Trail.

For instance, a new Australian Prime Ministers exhibition is planned at Old Parliament House.  The nearby National Archives of Australia celebrates Australia’s sporting history.

The National Film and Sound Archive will screen arguably the world’s first feature film, The Story of The Kelly Gang, on weekdays during Floriade in the new Arc Cinema.
