Borneo Sevens tournament a boost for tourism
The highly anticipated Borneo Sevens rugby tournament is expected to be a boon for East Malaysian tourism and host city Sandakan in particular, says Sandakan Municipal Council president, Datuk James Wong.
It is being dubbed ‘the Greenest Sevens in the World’ and hosts national teams for the inaugural Asia Pacific Cross Regional Sevens.
The competition takes place at the Eagles Rubgy Club from February 27 – March 1.
"The Borneo Sevens will no doubt boost the local economy with the influx of large number of foreign teams as well as from Peninsular Malaysia to our city," Wong said.
"A major sports event like this also contributes to local tourism. Visiting rugby officials and players will have the chance to indulge in the offerings of our city and the fond memories they bring home will hopefully spur them to come back again for future visits," he added.
The event is also a platform to promote greater social harmony and understanding among Malaysia’s ethnic groups and international visitors.
"Sitting and cheering together at a sports event in support of our local sportsmen is certainly one way of enhancing unity and, with the presence of the many overseas teams, making new foreign friends is an added bonus," he said.
