British teen pleads not guilty to making false gang-rape claim in Cyprus
A British teenager has appeared in court in Cyprus and denied making a false claim against 12 Israeli youths in Cyprus.
The 19-year-old alleged she had been attacked by the group, aged between 15 and 18, in Ayia Napa in June.
Police later arrested her on suspicion of making a false accusation. She retracted the accusation and has since been in prison for over a month on a public mischief charge.
However, the teenager and her family say her later statement retracting the allegation was made ‘under duress’.
She will now go on trial, with the court case due to start on October 2.
She has been released on bail, but must report to police in Nicosia three times a week.
In addition, she has surrendered her passport and is not allowed to leave the country.
