Call for ban on drones near airports
A former police commission has called for all drones to be banned from airspace near airports,
Lord Stevens of Kirkwhelpington told the House of Lords the ban would eliminate the possibility of a collision with commercial aircraft, including passenger planes.
Addressing a debate in the House on drone regulation, the independent crossbencher said: "Surely a quick answer is to prohibit any drones in that area."
The government is currently consulting on drone regulation after 70 incidents involving drones were reported last year.
Transport minister Lord Ahmad of Wimbeldon said the government had already made progress and is looking at issues of geofencing as well as different systems for detecting the aircraft.
