Canada rolls out new mandatory rules for international travelers

Tuesday, 04 Nov, 2020 0

Canada’s Public Health Agency has issued new rules for inbound air travelers.

Starting 21 November, they are required to submit details of a quarantine plan and fill out a self-assessment form before departure.

This is a change from the current procedure which allows this to be done on arrival in Canada.

It must now be submitted via the ArriveCAN app in advance.

Anyone not complying with this could be fined up to $1,000, the agency said.

The rules apply to visitors arriving by air but those coming by land boders are also ‘strongly encouraged’ to do the same.

"This is a significant step in stopping the spread of Covid-19 as traveler information can be shared quickly and securely with provinces and territories to contact travelers for public health follow-up, and with law enforcement to verify compliance with the mandatory isolation order," the health agency said.

The ArriveCAN app should also be used within Canada to update authorities that the user has reached the location where they will spend their quarantine or mandatory self-isolation.

They are also required to submit daily health updates.

"If the traveler is deemed not compliant, the border services officer may refer the traveler to the Public Health Agency of Canada and in cases of non-compliance, the person may be subject to further enforcement measures," the agency said.
