Canadian flight crew detained in D.R. drugs bust
Canadian carrier Pivot Airlines has been caught up in a multi-million dollar drugs bust.
Drug control agents in the Dominican Republic have seized 210 kilograms of cocaine hidden on the plane.
The private flight from Punta Cana International Airport was headed to Toronto.
The National Directorate for Drug Control has detained nine Canadians, including all the flight crew.
The Missisauga-based airline said crewmembers discovered the shipment and reported it.
“The crew immediately reported the discovery to local authorities,” the airline said.
The airline said it also reported the incident to the RCMP, and is cooperating with the Dominican investigation.
It has hired lawyers to assist its detained employees.
“Our primary concern is our crew’s safety, security, ethical and humane treatment,” Pivot said.
