Carnival on course to meet environmental target
Carnival Corp said it is on track to reach its target of 20% reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases.
The cruise line said its ships have already reduced emissions by 19% and are likely to reach the goal of 20% by 2015.
To commemorate annual Earth Day, Carnival has been outlining the environmental initiatives it has been taking to reduce its carbon footprint on the seas.
Almost half of its ships have advanced wastewater treatment systems and around one-fifth can connect with shore power outlets during ports of call.
Ships have reduced fuel intake by 5% since 2007 and shipboard waste recycling increased by 18% between 2011 and 2012, Carnival said.
At the same time, Cruise Lines International Association has been highlighting the industry’s efforts to preserve resources and protect the ocean environment.
CLIA’s CEO Christine Duffy said one of its member cruise lines managed to recycle over 50% of solid waste generated throughout 2013, and another unnamed CLIA member line achieved a 32% reduction in CO2 emissions over five years.
"The industry takes its responsibility as caretakers of the environment seriously and cruise lines continue to invest in systems and technologies that improve overall environmental performance," said Duffy.
